Double Check - Cynthia Schwertsik
Drawing, in this case: performative frottage is an immediate and intimate medium where ideas are swiftly transferred to paper. I always have pen and paper within reach, that gives me the comforting feeling that I will not miss a moment.

Double Check

An ongoing video series since 2017

Graphite and charcoal frottage and QR – code 9link to video) on paper

Single channel video

Do you have a growing distrust in the truth of the visual world around you? Are you suspicious about the persistence of pixilation? As for myself I increasingly feel the need to double check my presence through touch, in the attempt to bridge the gap between a visual appearance and the kinetic experience of being alive. As an everyday record, I transfer my changing profile as a landscape of assurance onto paper.

In these drawings, the paper is warped into three-dimensional forms through the pressure against the underlying landscape of the face. The paper captures the tracks inscribed into skin, thereby replicating almost a ghost of a portrait.

Drawing, in this case. frottage is an immediate and intimate medium where ideas are swiftly transferred to paper.  I always have pen and paper within reach, which gives me the comforting feeling that I will not miss a moment.

Then I add an intricate hand drawing of a QR-code in the bottom corner of the finished portrait – that links back to the scene – “the making of” this particular piece.
